Word of the Day

2025-05-08 uncurried

In computing, "uncurried" refers to a function that takes all its arguments at once, as opposed to a curried function which takes arguments one at a time. Uncurrying is essentially the reverse of currying, transforming a series of functions that each take one argument into a single function that takes all arguments at once.

Currying

A curried function is one that is designed to be partially applied. This means you can call it with some of its arguments, and it will return a new function that is waiting for the remaining arguments.

Uncurrying

Uncurrying reverses this process. It takes a sequence of functions (each taking a single argument) and converts them into a single function that accepts all arguments as a tuple or list.

Example

Imagine a function add(x, y) which adds two numbers. A curried version of this might be curriedAdd(x)(y). An uncurried version would be uncurriedAdd(x, y).

Benefits of Uncurrying

In some programming environments, uncurried functions are generally preferred for efficiency because they avoid the overhead of creating closures and partial application during function calls, according to Wikipedia.
